Sometimes, babies who primarily breastfeed start to struggle with drinking from a bottle around 2-3 months old. This can happen even if the baby was able to drink from a bottle when they were younger. Parents are often told that the baby is refusing the bottle because they prefer the breast. Most of the time, the baby is refusing the bottle because drinking from the bottle feels too hard to them or they choke or gag. This is often due to a baby’s oral anatomy or oral function. If your baby is struggling to drink from a bottle, RK Lactation Care can schedule a bottle refusal consultation in the comfort of your home if you live in Louisville, Boulder, Gunbarrel, Niwot, Lafayette, Broomfield, Superior, and Westminster, CO. Appointments are generally scheduled Monday-Friday between 9 AM and 5 PM, however, early evening or weekend appointments may be available if needed. The lactation consultant will ask about feeding history, assess your baby’s oral anatomy, and suggest exercises and ways of offering the bottle to help make bottle feeding easier for your baby. The lactation consultant may suggest a different shape of bottle nipple that might be easier for your baby. The family will work with the baby over the weeks following the appointment to help the baby learn to feed from a bottle. The lactation consultant will provide check-ins and follow up with the family during this time to support the baby’s learning. While no outcomes can be guaranteed, many babies are able to drink a couple of ounces from the bottle after a couple of weeks of the family working with the baby using what they learned at the appointment.
